Frequently Asked Questions
What is psychology?
Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. It involves understanding how people think, feel, and act in various situations.
What does a psychologist do?
Psychologists assess, diagnose, and treat mental health issues and emotional problems. They use various therapeutic techniques to help individuals improve their well-being and cope with challenges.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
Psychologists provide therapy and counselling and conduct psychological assessments. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication and provide medical treatments for mental health disorders.
Can psychologists prescribe medication for ADHD?
No, psychologists in Australia cannot prescribe medication for ADHD. Medication for ADHD can only be prescribed by a psychiatrist or a medical doctor. Psychologists focus on assessment, diagnosis, and therapeutic interventions, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, to help manage ADHD symptoms. If medication is considered, a psychologist will typically refer you to a psychiatrist or your GP for further evaluation and treatment.

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
In Australia, you don’t need a referral to see a psychologist. However, a referral from your GP can provide access to Medicare rebates for certain services.
How much does seeing a psychologist cost?
The cost can vary depending on the type of service provided. For example, therapy sessions for children are typically charged at $220/hr. Assessment sessions for children and adults are charged at $240/hr. Medicare rebates are available for eligible services.
Can I claim a rebate from Medicare for psychological services?
Yes, with a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, you can claim rebates for up to 10 individual therapy sessions per calendar year through Medicare.
Are there any private health insurance rebates for psychological services?
Many private health insurance funds offer rebates for psychological services. Check with your health fund for specific details and coverage.
